I can’t expect other people surrounding me to do the work for me.
I personally agree with the principal regarding his concerns about liability issues. Then when the writers write in Regina saying that it’s brain surgery, getting into all that “deaf pride” talk and grabbing Kathryn’s hands, my thoughts just went spiraling down the drain! but you can have a conversation on the phone or listen to music or laughter.” This quote was GREAT because it informed the public yes it doesn’t replace normal hearing BUT it’s still a MIRACLE! Daphne getting into a fire accident in class and getting nearly hit by the car are examples of scenarios that can happen when we do not have the ability to hear. Kathryn said to Daphne “I know it’s not the same as regular hearing. What was so disappointing was that, as I was watching the episode, I felt at the beginning that they were doing such a great job so far presenting the positives about CIs and the reasons why it’s so important to hear: The principal said the CI works wonders for his granddaughter’s friend. Deaf people who have encountered this experience, please feel free to chime in.
To be honest, it’s really hard for me to speak about this issue as I have not experienced being “used” simply because I am deaf, and I’ve only heard very few stories from other deaf people who have been “used” by hearing people. The highlight of the deaf-related issue in this episode was Toby using deafness to manipulate Daphne and Emmett into playing poker by, for instance, asking them to use sign language as secret codes. I’m not going to dig into details as I really want to focus more on writing my thoughts on Episode 6, which really touched upon a lot on cochlear implants and deaf related issues.
